The Darker Side of Fashion

For AW10 collection for Dior was a collection of beautiful french romanticism with bias cut jackets contrasted against chic chiffon. A year later and all the volume and beauty seems to have dissipated. AW11 from The House of Dior was a muted, reserved and tailored presentation opened by Dior CEO Sidney Toledano. In his speech he referred to the Galliano Anti-Semitic scandal as a "terrible and wrenching ordeal for us all" whilst referring to Christian Dior's original ethos to "bring sparkle back into women's lives" after the horrors of WWII.

The final Dior collection under Galliano revealed red velvet princess dresses, large dramatic drapings of cape, mahogany boots and 70s chic inspired hats and velvet pants. The final Dior girl blew a kiss to the cameras and select amount of celebrities in the crowd, a fleeting flicker of Galliano before she was gone.

With the shamed designer's own line Galliano showcase collection being scrapped for this forthcoming Sunday in favour of  a muted presentation, news arose that Galliano had been admitted into the Arizona Rehab centre. As the curtain call came, in John's absence, Dior's atelier team took to the stage in apt clinical white coats. A representation of  how the house will now doctor the Dior brand back to full health.

Across town , as the Balmain show revealed a collection of glitz, bling and beautiful embellishment, designer Chrisophe Decarnin was absent from the final curtain call. It later surfaced that the great designer is suffering from exhaustion. With constant calls for creativity in a such a commercial, commodity driven industry - both high end and high street- are these two men the first casualties of fashion?
